Sustainable fashion leads the list of eCommerce fastest growing in 2023

Sustainable fashion leads the ranking of eCommerce companies that will grow the fastest during 2023. This is established by Casaleggio Associati’s eCommerce Ranking, an analysis that looks at more than 3 thousand companies selling online in Italy in 17 different product sectors and outlines the “eCommerce leaders” in four different categories: Top 10 eCommerce 2023, Top 100 eCommerce 2023, Top 10 Fastest Growing 2023 and, finally, Top 10 Industry Leaders 2023.

Top 10 eCommerce in Italy

According to Casaleggio Associati’s eCommerce Ranking, of the top ten leading online sales sites in Italy, the top three positions are all occupied by marketplaces: Amazon, eBay and Subito lead the ranking, followed by Booking and Trenitalia (both services), Leroy Merlin (Home and furniture), MediaWorld (electronics), Ikea (Home and furniture) and, finally, Unieuro and Samsung (electronics).

But the sustainable fashion industry will register the most important growth in 2023.

Vinted tops the list of Top 10 eCommerce Fastest Growing 2023

In the first position of the Top 10 eCommerce Fastest Growing 2023 is in fact Vinted, known the c2c platform created in 2008 that allows people to sell and exchange used items giving them a second life.

However, this is not the first time the Lithuanian company has reached the top of a ranking: in 2021 it had been elected the most downloaded app in Italy, as well as being the largest consumer-to-consumer platform present in Europe dedicated to second-hand fashion with a total of more than 45 million subscribers. And its growth seems unstoppable, so much so that it also ranked second (behind Zalando) in the Top 10 eCommerce Ranking for the Fashion category.

Second Hand: a growing market

Already in 2021, the Second Hand Market generated an economic value of 24 billion euros in Italy for a total of almost 23 million consumers (data from the Second Hand Economy Observatory), and the estimates for the coming years are even rosier: the global second-hand market will grow by 15/20% per year for the next five years (data from Bcg Consulting).

A boom to which eCommerce has contributed and will continue to contribute enormously, considering that online sales of second-hand products already account for almost 50% of the total to date, with a total value of 11.8 billion euros in 2021. In fact, there are a great number of online realities that allow to exchange second-hand objects and clothes: from Vestiaire Collective (a French reality among the first to invest in the sector), to Wallapop, Depop, Etsy and the less known Farfetch and TheRealReal, or even the Italian Green Chic, Maimesso and Ronoon. In the coming years sites and Apps dedicated to the second hand market will presumably continue to flourish.

What emerges, then, is the growing attention of consumers to the issue of sustainability; an ingredient evidently indispensable to ensure the growth of an eCommerce.

But how to be green even if you don’t sell used?

Selling secondhand items or clothes, however, is not the only way to more sustainable eCommerce. In fact, eShoppers interested in buying new products are also issue-conscious, so much so that according to an analysis by PrestaShop, overall 8 percent of online orders are cancelled if the consumer is not offered a “greendelivery alternative.

Logistics, therefore, will greatly affect the capacity and speed of eCommerce growth in the near future.

For this reason, it is necessary to offer users alternative and less environmentally impactful delivery solutions. Pickup Points and Locker can offer the answer to this need since they allow significant savings in terms of polluting emissions compared to traditional home delivery, as well as guaranteeing objective advantages for the customer, such as the possibility of choosing where and when to pick up the order. A naturally viable alternative for returns as well.
