Proximity Logistics, the new frontier of eCommerce

Speaking at the fifth meeting of the Hybrid Age was Lorenzo Maggioni, Founder & CEO of startup GEL Proximity, the first platform entirely dedicated to Proximity Logistics.

According to research by the Baymard Institute, 70 percent of virtual shopping carts are abandoned. How come? Among the main reasons is eCommerce’s lack of logistics options. Lorenzo Maggioni started from this consideration during his talk at the fifth event of The Hybrid Age, organized by the Milan Monza Brianza Lodi Chamber of Commerce. Maggioni founded GEL Proximity, the first platform entirely dedicated to Proximity Logistics, with the goal of providing eCommerce with the personalized logistics experience that consumers demand, with a focus on the environment and Urban Logistics.

“We have been working on this project for about 3 years within the fertile ecosystem of Politecnico di Milano of which GEL Proximity became a Spin Off in 2020. I saw Proximity Logistics as an incredible opportunity for eCommerce,” explained Lorenzo Maggioni, “which with the pandemic has exploded and made this need even more evident. The eCommerce sector is maintaining a constant double-digit growth (+43% in 2020 and +20% in 2021) and our cities are increasingly congested so much so that parcel delivery is becoming an important issue even for administrations that are looking for concrete measures to decongest urban traffic related to Logistics. And it is the consumer himself who is calling for new delivery options: in fact, we have been able to observe that those eCommerce providers who offer alternative logistics services to home delivery are registering higher revenues and less customer dispersion within the online order finalization path.

GEL technology offers more than 30,000 of automated Pickup Points and Lockers allowing consumers to choose from multiple Proximity services across the country and won the Top award of the Punto Impresa Digitale (PID) project, an initiative of the Chambers of Commerce and Unioncamere to support the digitization of businesses in the challenging context of Impresa 4.0. The PID offers a range of services and opportunities for businesses such as basic digital start-up courses on Impresa 4.0 and the Digital Agenda, training sessions, mentoring by competent figures or direct assistance.
