Here's what men love to buy online

According to Eurostat’s “The Lives of Women and Men in Europe” study, among the products most purchased via eCommerce by men are those related to consumer electronics.

Why are we telling you this? Well, next March 19 will be Father’s Day in Italy and the hunt for the perfect gift has already begun, including online.

That’s why this month we have analyzed for you the Consumer Technology market whose sales in the last year have recorded very interesting numbers. Let’s find out.

How much is the Consumer Technology market worth

According to GfK estimates, 2022 was a decidedly good year for Consumer Technology whose sales increased by 9.2 percent and the total value reached 17.5 billion euros. Driving the growth was Consumer Electronics, which posted +35.9 percent, followed by Large Household Appliances (+9.7 percent), Telephony (+6.6 percent) and Small Household Appliances (+5.5 percent). Information Technology/Office, on the other hand, declined slightly, representing the only sector that declined (-0.8%).

Online sales grow

Despite the fact that the size of the Italian market is still smaller than in other European countries such as France, Great Britain and Germany, it appears to be growing: last year the sector recorded +18.5 percent, while the growth of the online channel was 8.1 percent. Overall, therefore, the weight of the online channel recorded in 2022 is 24.2 percent, slightly down from 24.4 percent in 2020 (a year that we recall was the one since the Pandemic), but up sharply from just five years ago when only 14 percent of the products in the category – amounting to about 2.3 billion euros – were sold through the online channel.

It is also interesting to note that according to estimates by AIRES – Associazione Italiana Retailer Elettrodomestici Specialializzati, EuCer Council, ANCRA – Associazione Nazionale Commercianti Radio Televisione Elettrodomestici Dischi e Affini and Confcommercio, reported in the study “L’evoluzione del mercato dell’elettronica di consumo in Italia,” until five years ago Amazon held about 65 percent of sales, while the rest was pulverized in more than 500 e-commerce sites.

In addition, it should be noted that the difficulty in sourcing raw materials (starting with semiconductors) over the past year, together with rising logistics costs, have severely slowed the growth of the sector, which could therefore have been even more sustained.

Top selling products

As anticipated, according to the Eurostat survey, men would be more likely to buy electronics-related products online. Specifically, a higher percentage of men than women buy electronic equipment (32 percent versus 16 percent) and movies (28 percent versus 21 percent) online.

The top selling products online in the area of Technology and Consumer Electronics include smartphones, tablets, laptops, and bluetooth systems for audio, music, and video.

If we take Amazon’s sales for the “Electronics” category as an example, we also find Fire Tv Stick, Echo Dot, Headphones and Smart Sockets among the best-selling products.

The importance of logistics for a perfect gift

Whatever product your dads (including non-electronics) love the most and that you want to give them on their Day, what matters is that the gift arrives on time and, if possible, without “spoiling” the surprise. Which could easily happen by having the package delivered directly to the house (we speak from experience!!).

Fortunately, the alternative solution to home delivery is there. Thanks to eCommerce order pickup at Lockers and Pickup Points, it is indeed possible to choose the most convenient place and time to pick up the package outside the home, without the need to wait for the courier at the door (and without the risk of the gift recipient being the one to pick it up).

GEL Proximity allows online stores to be integrated with tens of thousands of Pickup Points and Lockers already in operation throughout the country and internationally. If you are an eCommerce manager and would like to offer your customers this opportunity, contact us!
